Rachel T. Smith
Rachel T. Smith is an American writer and physical therapist living in Germany, temporarily. She enjoys writing poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction. She posts weekly on her Insta-Haiku account @racheltsmith_writer, to honor her first poetry professor.
Her poem "Emptying the Sink" explores the global destruction of the planet through the eyes of a mundane housewife who feels ineffectual. It reminds of the struggles and importance of caring!
Emptying the Sink
Her head down, shoulders slumped, ignoring
the intermittent neck pain of years
that was the last of it, what if
swirling down the drain
disappearing into a euphemism
the water’s useless flow, someone’s last sip
in the sink apocalyptic landscapes
dust clouds and dirt faces
out the window monotonous placation
concrete and characterless
toweling the dishes dry, worrying
about the day it runs out
trees to make paper, food to make children
her husband’s accusations of apathy, ignoring
her concerns of suffocating
when the oxygen is gone
she thinks, what would happen
to their marriage if she never again
emptied the sink
she thinks about people like her, ineffective
with more thoughts than actions, she sees
her husband’s blank stare
an attempt at attrition, she
hears him say, no one cares about killing butterflies
